Dance and Civic Spirit: Experiences in the Cities Araraquara and Macaé
Presentation: Livia Patrizi
What initiatives are there in Brazil trying to milder the blatant social differences? What role do artists from the dance field play in the face of such challenges? Some highly successful examples will be presented in this discussion to demonstrate the power of art for the cultivation of civic spirit.
Public-Private Political Approach to Dance in Araraquara:
Gilsamara Moura (Araraquara) Dancer, choreographer, doctoral
candidate in Communication and Semiotics/Arts at the PUC-SP,
vice-president of FUNDART, executive director of the municipal
school for dance Iracema Nogueira, member of Red Sudamericana
de Danza, director of the Grupo Gestus and the company Shuffle
Trips, initiator and curator of the Araraquara Dance Festival,
coordinator of the course Teaching Physical Arts at the UNIARA.
The Grupo Gestus was founded 16 years ago by dancers who were unsatisfied with
the classical dance training available at the academies. The Araraquara Dance
Festival was developed as early as 2001 as a public project. Another case study,
which will be introduced in this lecture, is the municipal school for dance Iracema
Nogueira, which Moura used as the object of study for her dissertation at the
PUC-SP. The municipal dance school was established in 2002 in Araraquara. How
do these projects relate to one another? Which networks have developed out of
this relationship? Cooperative networks, emotional networks, networks of resistance… civic
spirit… authors such as Zigmunt Bauman, Hommi Bhabha, Hardt and Negri
continue the discussion on the inseparability of art and science suggested here.
I Want an Ideology To Live For:
Paulo Azevedo (Macaé) – MA Social Politics, degree
in Sports Science, director of the company Membros Cia de dança
and the Integrated Center for the Study of the Hip- Hop Movement
(CIEM-h2). His research is dedicated to the methodology of
working with dancers with and without disabilities and cultural
politics for Brazilian youths
This talk seeks to review the early founding phase of the group Membros and take
a particularly close look at the experiences made by the group in collaboration
with the choreographer Taís Vieira at public schools in Munizips Macaé.
In the course of the talk, a connection will be established between perspectives
on education (as the primary criteria), the local cultural context and the ideological
goals of the company’s founders.
Membros: Dance, Politics and Family.
Taís Vieira (Macaé)- dance training at the UNIVERCIDADE
RJ, director of the Integrated Center for the Study of the
Hip -Hop Movement (CIEM-h2), choreographer for Compagnie Membros
Cia de dança. Research on prisoner literature..
This talk seeks to review the formulation process and implementation of political
goals in the work of the Compagnie Membros and in particular to discuss the recognition
of these goals in Europe. By defining the aesthetics of their dance as a method
with which to discuss alternative forms of social interaction, Compagnie Membros
has created a space for its members to live in and work together, space for research
and the production of knowledge as well as room for growth both as individuals
and as a group.
